historic house
JESMOND
a detailed rebuilding & redesign of the lodge to the former Lord Mayors Mansion
NMD won the LABC regional & national award - shortlisted against 10 national design firms across the UK to win the design excellence award for the best regenerated house in the UK
the project started as downsizing & relocation for the client one street away from their family home - the intent was for a highly insulated & Eco friendly property to encompass heat recovery technology & UFH
the property had to be stripped back, the roof removed & retained walls underpinned due to old mine working under the site
the whole new build was floated on a table top slab over piled foundations to avoid protected tree roots - the work in a conservation area was developed in partnership with the local planning & conservation team, to retain an important heritage asset but also to be able to increase the floor space from 850sqft to 2500sqft by utilising the volume within the roof & creating a modest extension to a blind boundary
internally the aim was to balance contemporary open plan & snug spaces, modern layout which opened out onto south facing garden with unhindered aspect to the formal grounds of the Mansion House.
