studio
NEWCASTLE
we created in collaboration with our design colleagues at Neil Wilson Design a studio home for them during lockdown
an innocent conversation regarding working 'from home' lead to a remote design session to create the 'pop up' office space
Neil was working with his team from offices on the edge of Newcastle centre - with COVID restrictions sending everyone home the idea quickly crystallised to create a well designed studio in the grounds of Neil's home & to build an example of what could be done without the need for Planning permissions as the accommodation could 'fit' permitted development - but equally to accommodate Neil, it had to be an example of what good design can produce
the studio also had to be built quickly during the pandemic, so we turned to a joinery contractor who we'd worked with before & we knew we could trust - materials like the larch cladding were all produced & sourced locally, the only item to travel was the bespoke aluminium high performance sliding door
the cladding is set with a black backing to emphasise the shadow lines, all carefully spaced to eliminate any cuts or awkward junctions - the result is a 'cabin' built like a piece of furniture - but then that is part of what Neil does
internally Neil designed bespoke fitted furniture, choosing the particular grain & colour of solid wood as all the fit out is a 'showroom' for his abilities, the subtle lighting & loose furniture have created a calm work space that to this day means Neil's only commute is across his garden
services for water, drainage & electric/broadband were all integrated with re-landscaping of the immediate site, Neil sourced Corten & galvanised steel planters for wild flowers and fig trees
